Kathy's
House is an opportunity for mentally handicapped young women
to achieve their highest level of independence in a loving
Christian environment. To be located in the Tampa Bay area
of Florida, it is currently a vision, but is rapidly becoming
a reality. Upon completion, Kathy's House will be a state
licensed home for three to four young adult women under
the supervision of one or two house parents. An existing
home will be purchased and retrofitted to accommodate the
special needs of the residents. Ideally, each resident will
have their own bedroom, and the house will have a game room,
swimming pool, and fully equipped kitchen. A search is currently
underway for a neighborhood location near public transportation
with trails for walking and biking and hopefully a park
nearby.
Each
resident will be carefully selected for the cohesiveness
of the group, and will be expected to maintain a job, either
in the community or in a vocational program. She will be
responsible for her own room, personal belongings, and household
chores under the guidance of the house parents. Weekly church
attendance and group devotions will allow residents to learn
and grow in their spiritual lives.
In
short, the goal of Kathy's House is to develop caring, responsible
adults that can interact safely, successfully, and confidently
in the community while enjoying an abundant life with a
high self-esteem.
